Swallow Nest
We’re thrilled to report that the swallows at the Old Barn are thriving. At time of going to print, at least three chicks had hatched and were being busily fed by their devoted parents. Even more exciting — a second pair has also taken up residence at the barn, so it’s shaping up to be a bumper year for these incredible birds.
Swallows return to us year after year, raising their broods before making the long journey back to Africa. It’s always a joy to watch them swooping over the fields, gathering insects mid-air. We help support them (and many other species!) by leaving some areas of meadow uncut to encourage a healthy population of invertebrates and small mammals — a small action that supports the entire food chain.

Mini Rangers & Youth Rangers in Action
In June, our Mini Rangers made a special request – pond dipping. And what a brilliant adventure it was! We discovered toad tadpoles at various stages of metamorphosis, dragonfly larvae, smooth newts, water boatman, cased caddisfly larvae and a wolf spider. A fascinating afternoon learning about pond life and how it all connects in nature.

Meanwhile, our Youth Rangers took a deep dive into wildflower diversity at Preston Hill and Dell Field. They identified over 15 different wildflower species, then carried out a meadow sweep, uncovering more than 10 species of insects — including the wolf spider carrying her egg sack, see image below!
A fun, hands-on way to explore biodiversity and the vital roles these species play in our ecosystem. Why not join us! For more info and to book a space follow the link here: https://bookwhen.com/boxmoortrust
