January brings the snow,
Makes our feet and fingers glow.
February brings the rain,
Thaws the frozen lake again….
The Months, Sara Coleridge
(23/12/1802 – 3/5/1852)
I was musing on how much weather we’ve had so far this year and I looked for this well known poem I remember from school. I suspected that it wasn’t very modern when I read that:
Warm September brings the fruit,
Sportsmen then begin to shoot. (!)
However, I was surprised to learn that the author was the daughter of Samuel Taylor Coleridge of Kubla Khan and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner fame. These little pieces of research, apart from uncovering some fascinating facts, surprisingly do sometimes pop up in quizzes.
Anyway, to get back to the weather. Since Christmas, we’ve had rain, snow, ice, blinding sun showing up my uncleaned windows, and, as of today , 22nd January, storm Isha is wreaking havoc across the country. The choir, so far, has not been affected by weather. Our Tuesday rehearsals have carried on as normal and we’ve welcomed a number of new members this term. We always have room for more, you can find details on our website and our facebook page. If you’d like more information, please do call 07402 181182.
We give concerts and we sing in care homes and clubs throughout the year. There are also opportunities for people to come along and see what it’s like to sing with us, at dedicated events. Watch out for information about the next of these.
Yesterday, we braved the wind to give a performance for Caritas at Our Lady Catholic Church, which the audience enjoyed nearly as much as we did! We just love to take the fun we have in singing together, on the road. Thanks to all and particularly to ‘assistant musical director’, Judi, who formed an immediate rapport with our audience and kept us all going nicely
Our programme is in progress for this term with a Barn Dance on 20th April, to the music of Cloudburst, with Wendy Harrup, from the sopranos, acting as caller. We have had enquiries from local organisations interested in short performance but have yet to agree any dates.
You can find us Tuesday mornings (term time), 9.45 -11.35am, at Grovehill Church of the Resurrection, Hemel Hempstead, HP2 6 BJ.
A little bit about us …
We sing all kinds of music from Bach to the Beatles and from early music to bang up to date. Songs from stage musicals, traditional folk tunes and some light classical and religious stuff too. Our rehearsals are FUN and there is lots of laughter. We learn mostly by the “sing it after me” method. Both our musical director, Rufus Frowde, and the accompanist, Judi Kelly, know that encouragement is the best way to get the best out of people.
As well as singing for our own enjoyment, we perform in care homes and social clubs throughout the year and hold at least two public concerts a year.
