“I love deadlines.
I love the whooshing noise they make
as they go by.”
(Douglas Adams, 11.3.1952 – 11.5.2001)
Just today, I received a reminder from Emma (your esteemed editor) that I needed to get my copy for the May magazine to her by midnight. This is a regular occurrence, but so is my reply asking when is the latest time she will accept it! But that’s enough about me.
When the mag. drops through your letterbox, our spring concert will be a week away, …
and there are some deadlines that just can’t be ignored.
We have two more rehearsals before we take to the stage and our musical director Rufus is keen that we should sing as much as possible ‘off book’. He has, in effect, issued a three-line whip. I hate to think what might happen if we dare to disobey.
We’ve all been working very hard. There are some very tricky harmonies to perfect, but we love the programme which features compositions from the 18th century to the 1960’s.
There are songs about the moon, songs about water, African-American Spirituals, songs about, singing, songs from the shows, and swing numbers including, of course, Glenn Miller’s 1939 hit. We’ll be singing a set of folk songs, which feature birds and two rounds, one from Beethoven, again featuring water, and ‘Ah Poor Bird’ a beautiful melody, sad, but with an uplifting ending.
Dacorum Community Choir was founded in November 2009. Our first meeting was in a small classroom in Astley Cooper School in Hemel, when thirty people turned up. We soon outgrew that room and now number about 110 members.
We rehearse on Tuesday mornings in term time at the Church of the Resurrection in Grovehill, HP2 6BJ, between 9.45 and 11.35am. Although we use the church as our rehearsal space, we are not a church choir. We do sing some religious music but our repertoire is mainly secular.
If you would like to join a lively and energetic bunch of people, please feel free to come along to a rehearsal to see whether we’re for you. Our first meeting after the concert is on Tuesday 14th May. There are no auditions, we’re a friendly lot and you can be sure of a warm welcome.
For more information about the choir and how to join see www.dacorumcommunitychoir.org or www.facebook.com/dacorumcommunitychoir for photos and more stuff.
We look forward to meeting you at the concert, and maybe at our next rehearsal.
