January News from Dacorum Community Choir

Just three nights ago in St. Mary’s Church in the Old Town the roof was raised with the sounds of our Advent concert, ‘O Holy Night’. Many weeks of preparation, with some confusion and angst on the part of the singers, notably in ‘Joy to the World’, it all came together magnificently in the end.

Our final rehearsal on the Tuesday before was pretty awful, but Rufus just kept on smiling as he always does. He is the glue that keeps us all together.

The small church was packed. An audience of around 150 joined us with gusto singing the well-known carols and our performance was boosted by their appreciation of our efforts, and the readings by John Myres and Tammy Clark.

We collected an impressive £400 for our charity. The Mayor’s Fund, 2024 aims to help community groups in Dacorum build a positive sustainable future, offering targeted grants for initiatives which may not find financial assistance elsewhere. We were honoured to welcome Councillor Brenda Link, this year’s mayor, to the concert.
The week had started well, with our member’s Christmas Lunch in the Cafe in Grovehill Community Centre. Good food and loads of laughter added to the festive spirit.

On Sunday 15th, St. John’s church in Boxmoor held their carols and Christmas trees festival complete with a visit from Santa.

So, the turkey’s been torn and the soup’s been supped and we can’t face any more pudding. We’ve run out of batteries and the wrappings have gone in the re-cycling bin, or been smoothed out and put away for next year by the more frugal. All that’s left is Twelfth Night!

So, What does 2025 have in store?

I don’t know, but I can assure you it will be fun and exciting. We have two dates in the diary:

On Saturday May 10th we’ll be staging our Spring Concert, at the Methodist Church in Hemel, one of our favourite venues; and on August 29th, a party of us depart for Carlisle on tour.

If you’d like to join a vibrant and inclusive choir, our rehearsals resume at the Church of the Resurrection, in Grovehill, HP2 6BJ on Tuesday January 7th. Our meetings are from 9.45 to 11.35am in term times. There are no auditions and we welcome all adults.
