    Hedge Planting
Recently, we have been busy planting two new conservation hedges at Bovingdon Reach and Sheethanger Common. Some of our lovely volunteers helped with planting a hawthorn hedge at the bottom of Sheethanger Common, a project generously funded by Herts County Council under the late Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. Lots of you also kindly donated your time to come along to Bovingdon Reach at Westbrook Hay to assist with the planting there. The new hedgerow comprises a mix of wild cherry, wild privet, hawthorn and spindle amongst other native species. The cost of these hedging plants was part-funded by The Woodland Trust as part of their More Hedges scheme.

So, a HUGE thank you to all that have helped in creating these two new hedges, which will provide new wildlife corridors in the future, helping to improve habitat connectivity across the estate.

    Who’s Home?
In the autumn, our estate team and volunteers conducted a series of small mammal surveys across parts of the Trust land. This is an incredibly important set of surveys as the density of small mammals present in the habitat correlates directly to the success of barn owls raising chicks. The process involves live trapping of the animals using Longworth traps (with plenty of bedding and food to keep them happy) over the course of an evening followed by identification and release of the occupants the following morning. This is one of our superstars of the session… a Wood Mouse!

Should you wish to take part in this valuable research in the future, please visit our website and go to the Volunteering section.

    Say hello to Sandons Kilsby
This lovely Norfolk Horn ram has recently been bought from Essex. It is important for us to introduce new rams and ewes into our flock from time to time in order to refresh and improve our flock’s bloodline. We are proud to be instrumental in continuing to help prevent this rare breed, which has been around since the Middle Ages, from disappearing.

    New Year, New Job?
In the New Year, we will be recruiting a new admin team member to help out with social media, website, Trust events and general admin. If you think that could be you, please contact the office for further details and an application pack. Email: admin@boxmoortrust.org.uk

    Donating made easy
As a charitable Trust, we are most grateful to our supporters and beneficiaries who kindly make financial donations towards our work. If you would like to donate then please use the button below.  Thanks to everyone who has generously donated so far.
