Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company is preparing to launch one of its most ambitious and innovative projects to date this autumn, bringing together local writers, directors and performers in a celebration of original theatre.
The October production will feature eight new duologues, each written by a local playwright and directed by one of eight directors from the company. With 16 acting roles available, the project offers performers a unique opportunity to work closely with a director and fellow actor on a script that has never before been performed.
Unlike a traditional ensemble production, each duologue will focus on an intimate collaboration between two actors and a director, allowing participants to fully explore their characters and help shape the first-ever staging of new work.
The project has already generated considerable interest following two introductory evenings held at the Boxmoor Theatre, where prospective actors were able to meet the directors, hear readings from the scripts and learn more about the creative process behind the production.
Ciaran Connors, producer, believes the project represents something special for both participants and audiences. “This is a chance for actors to work more closely with their director than is usually possible. With one director and two actors per piece, there is time to dig into their performance with a fine-tooth comb and grow as actors and directors during their months with us,” he said.
Auditions will take place at the Boxmoor Theatre on 7 and 9 July. With eight directors casting simultaneously, performers will have the opportunity to be considered for multiple productions, increasing their chances of finding the role that best suits their talents.
Andrew Edgar, one of the project’s directors, said: “There’s something special about being the first person to bring a piece to life. With a new play, every choice is genuinely yours. There’s no precedent to follow or react against, you’re building the world from scratch.”
The collection of duologues will be performed on October 9 and 10 and promises an evening of fresh storytelling, diverse voices and original theatre created by and for the local community. For Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company, it is another example of how local theatre can provide exciting opportunities for artists while offering audiences something completely new.
