Now the curtain has come down on Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company’s production of Calendar Girls, thoughts at The Boxmoor Playhouse are turning to this year’s summer musical, Come From Away.
The multi-award-winning smash hit show takes to the stage from 30 June to 4 July and shares the inspiring true story of 7,000 air passengers grounded in Canada during the aftermath of 9/11 – and how the population of a small town opened their hearts to the world.
Director Karina Bygate said she has wanted to tell this remarkable story for a long time. “This show is a masterclass in ensemble storytelling, one of my favourite genres of theatre and a rare blend of artistic challenge, emotional truth and pure theatrical electricity. It’s a deeply uplifting musical about real people coming together at a time of immense tragedy yet is brimming with humour, heart and music that stirs the very soul. It’s topped off with a surprising amount of sheer joy as it focuses less on the tragedy itself and more on the kindness and community spirit that humanity showcases in times of utter despair. Actually, it’s more a September 12th story – what happened next.”
Karina said directing Come From Away is a unique challenge. “I have directed ensemble-driven shows previously where the actors transform between characters and create places and perspectives with minimalist staging. The additional challenge with this show is that it is underscored throughout, where the music and movement are inseparable. Transitioning from a scene on a plane to a meeting about bus strikes at the Town Hall then back to the plane in a couple of bars of music is a tricky puzzle to solve. Although, seeing a collection of humble mismatched chairs transform into a Boeing 737 is especially rewarding.”
With rehearsals in full swing, Karina is thoroughly enjoying working with her cast. She added: “I’m delighted by how quickly this group of talented actors have come together as a true ensemble, supporting one another instinctively. I’ve been struck by their commitment and how they have fully embraced the demands of this show. There’s a real sense that everyone is invested in telling this story well. Much like the story, they have become a real community.”
Ultimately, Come From Away is a piece that celebrates the community and Karina said creating it with Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company makes that feel especially meaningful. “Having been involved with the Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company for over 25 years, this is personal highlight and one I want to share with our audiences. We live in a time where news is driven by conflict, division and fear. This show reinforces the alternative view, that the majority of us demonstrate generosity, compassion and a sense of community. I know it will resonate with our audiences who will leave our theatre buzzing with positive emotion.”
