Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company is set for a memorable season of storytelling at The Boxmoor Playhouse, beginning with the heart-warming and inspiring Calendar Girls, running from 25th–28th March.
Based on the much-loved Miramax motion picture, Calendar Girls tells the true story of a group of ordinary women who achieve something extraordinary. When tragedy strikes, they come together to raise money for charity in an unconventional way, producing a calendar that celebrates friendship, courage and community spirit. Full of warmth, laughter and poignant moments, the play perfectly balances humour with heartfelt emotion. Audiences can expect sharp wit, relatable characters and a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people unite behind a cause. It’s a life-affirming evening of theatre that promises both big laughs and touching sincerity.
Maggie Harvey, director, says: “Calendar Girls is a story about friendship, resilience and the extraordinary things ordinary people can achieve together. It’s funny, moving and ultimately uplifting – audiences will laugh, they may shed a tear, but above all they’ll leave feeling inspired. It’s a celebration of community spirit, and there’s no better place to experience it than The Boxmoor Playhouse.”
Then, from 30th June-4th July, HHTC brings the global hit musical Come From Away to The Boxmoor Playhouse. With music and lyrics by Irene Sankhoff and David Hein, this award-winning show recounts the remarkable true story of 7,000 airline passengers unexpectedly grounded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, in the wake of 9/11. What unfolds is an uplifting celebration of kindness, compassion and human connection. Featuring a soaring, folk-inspired score and a fast-paced, ensemble-driven production style, Come From Away is an exhilarating theatrical experience that has captured hearts around the world.
Karina Bygate, director, says: “Come From Away is a powerful reminder of the very best in humanity. In a world that can often feel divided, this show celebrates kindness, generosity and the incredible connections that can form in the most unexpected circumstances. It’s fast-paced, uplifting and full of heart – I truly believe audiences will leave feeling moved, inspired and proud of what community spirit can achieve.”
