Hospice st francis

We were delighted to welcome a team from BBC London News to the Hospice recently to cover a story about an award-winning Chelsea Flower Show garden, which will soon find a permanent home in the Hospice grounds.

The Silver-Gilt winning Myeloma UK garden is due to be installed at the Hospice next month and features a 12-foot sculpture at its centre. The garden was inspired by Peter King, 76, from Great Gaddesden, who lost both his brother Graham and his wife Gill to Myeloma in 2016.

Peter, who raised over £10,000 through a crowdfunding campaign to move the garden to the Hospice, said: “Gill loved flowers and we always went to Chelsea. I knew they had gardens for charities so I thought it would be a fitting way to raise awareness of Myeloma.

“The Hospice is such a wonderful place. Gill spent her final six days there and when we arrived it felt like we were coming home. It also has beautiful grounds and I hope that by giving it a permanent home, the garden will bring hope and inspiration to Hospice users as well as all who work there.”

The garden, whose sculpture is constructed from layers of transparent blue acrylic,is modelled on Peter and Gill’s daughter Gemma Peace. An official unveiling scheduled for the autumn.

We’re bringing our first large-scale event to Berkhamsted and encouraging everyone to unleash their alter-ego at our brand new KAPOW Superhero Challenge on Sunday 8th July at Ashlyns School.

This 5k fun-filled obstacle course, set in the beautiful school grounds, is made up of unique giant inflatables to climb, duck, dodge, slide and run around.
You don’t need super powers to take part, however you must be at least 4ft (1.23 metres) tall, and all under-16s must be accompanied by a paying adult. One adult is permitted to be responsible for up to three under-16s. www.stfrancis.org.uk/kapow
